The Ancient Sicilian Lady
This is a departure from the usual method of creating a statue effect as I have retained more than you'd expect of the original tonality of the subject. The tonal difference between the subject's skin and clothing would normally be minimised and the statue as a whole would be given a global, barely-saturated, application of colour (typically from the cool end of the spectrum). In this treatment though, I wanted to retain some of the organic qualities of the subject and depart from the usual lifeless monotone effect. From the base of the stone upwards there is a transition from a natural state to one that is more organic in appearance and this is achieved without the implication of a chisel having been involved. The nature of the stone is manifestly more geological than that of a worked piece of rock and this serves to further emphasise the enigmatic quality of the piece to the extent that we are unsure whether to view it as a natural, or a manufactured, entity.

The original image was taken as a passport photograph (ideally suited due to the formal expression and forward facing orientation.
As we are trying to emulate classical sculpture, the subjects wrinkles are removed. The only cracks and crevices we require will be added later.
Hair has to be highly stylised or absent altogether if we are to mimic classical sculpture. Here the hair has been eliminated completely, though once removed, a new style can be added quite easily.
Although the original carvings were painted, we are more familiar with the, time eroded, bare stone versions of classical sculptures and so the colour is removed. Eyes were usually only painted onto the stone, so these have been removed too.
The final treatment is the addition of stone texture, cracks and signs of erosion.
