The image above depicts Manchester COLORAMA photo lab and the various people who worked therein. |

These three images were stitched together to form the basis of the layout. Everything else was fitted around this composite. |
The background is composed of several parts. The stairs are from a shopping mall, the right floor is from a driveway, the hole in the floor is from an excavated road, the left floor is a warehouse and the back wall is a combination of warehouse and a castle interior. |

Once the machines are added and light sources adjusted for colour and levels, the scene begins to resemble reality. |

The objects viewed out of context do not convince us because they have been coloured, shaded and shadowed specifically to fit the environment created for the composition. When viewed against this gradient, the objects, particularly those furthest away, appear incongruous; this is due primarily to the absence of the wall on which their shadows would fall and from which their luminosity and colour would be derived. |

| One of the final treatments of this piece was the inclusion of a focus mask. This alpha channel represents the distance of each object from the virtual camera that is capturing the scene. The white represents the closest objects while the black represents those objects furthest away. A mask such as this is easily created as long as each significant object is kept on its own layer. The focus is applied using photoshop's lens blur filter which permits realistic blurring to be applied to an image dependent upon the values of a corresponding alpha channel. |
