The candle had been left burning and a poor, hapless, moth, as is their custom, had been drawn to the flame.
The image was under exposed as the only light source had been the flame itself. The background was nothing more than a plain wall and the candle rested on a wall-mounted candle holder.
I replaced the plain background with a pattern fill in photoshop, duplicated the layer and distorted it to give the horizontal plane on which the candle appears to be now resting. I whacked-up the contrast and gave the whole image the red treatment. I added further shadows and a reflection of the flame on the virtual wall behind the candle.
The result is an image that is marginally less boring than the original, but you know how it is when you’ve spent a couple of hours tinkering with some stupid image; you feel that you have to save it in order to justify all the time that you wasted on it.
No moths were harmed in the making of this photograph.
